Hot Potatoes

Important Clarification on "APK": There is no official Android app (APK) for creating Hot Potatoes exercises. Hot Potatoes is a computer program (for Windows/Mac) that you install on a laptop or PC.

You use the computer to make the quizzes. The result is an HTML file (website) that students can open on their phones (Android/iOS) to take the quiz. Here is the explanation of JMatch and JCloze:

1. What is Hot Potatoes?

Hot Potatoes is a free software suite that includes six applications. Teachers use it to create interactive web-based exercises that can be graded automatically.

2. JMatch (Matching Exercises)

Function:

JMatch is designed to create matching or ordering exercises. It presents items on the left and a jumbled list on the right, asking the student to connect them.

Two Output Modes:

1. Standard (Dropdown): Best for long lists. The student picks the matching answer from a dropdown menu.

2. Drag-and-Drop: Best for images or short lists. The student physically drags the item from the right and drops it next to the item on the left.

Best Uses:

Vocabulary: Match a word (Left) to its definition (Right).

Visuals:Match a picture (Left) to a word (Right).

Translation:Match a word in English (Left) to its translation (Right).

Sequencing:Put sentences of a conversation in the correct order.

3. JCloze (Cloze/Gap-fill Exercises)

Function: JCloze creates "fill-in-the-blank" exercises. You type a full text, and the program removes specific words that the student must guess.

Key Features:

Auto-Gap: You can tell the program to automatically delete every 5th word (or n-th word) to test general comprehension.

Hints: If a student is stuck, they can click a "Hint" button to get the next letter of the missing word (usually with a penalty to their score).

Specific Clues: You can add a specific clue for a difficult word (e.g., "Past tense of 'run'").

Alternative Answers: You can program it to accept multiple correct answers (e.g., accepting both "car" and "automobile").

Best Uses:

Grammar:Remove all verbs to test conjugation.

Lyrics/Listening: Paste song lyrics, remove key words, and have students listen and fill in the gaps.

Reading Comprehension: Remove keywords to ensure students understand the context.

Summary Comparison
